Rubberized concrete is a new type of concrete widely studied in recent years. Although the strength of rubberized concrete will reduce with the addition of rubber powder, its toughness, ductility and abrasion resistance can improve significantly by comparison with the common concrete. So far, traditional theory about concrete abrasion resistance can not completely explain concrete's abrasion mechanism. At least, the effects of some key factors (such as concrete's toughness) have not been attached enough importance it deserves, thus among what have been studied, most researchers focused their attention on improving the abrasion resistance of ingredients and the bonding strength between ingredients but ignored the toughness of concrete. So whether the influence of rubber powder on concrete's toughness affects the abrasion resistance is a problem waiting to be discovered. This study is part of a national natural science foundation project"The Performance Study on Roller Compacted Concrete Technique"(Grant No.50679054). The main concern is rubberized concrete's abrasion resistance. By using the same volume of rubber powder to replace sand, this study adopted a test (ring method) in which the concrete can resist the erosion in sand-loaded rivers and discussed the abrasion resistance of rubberized concrete in different volume content of rubber powder. The results indicated that:1) the compressive resistance of rubberized concrete would decrease gradually with the increase of rubber powder;2) after destruction, rubberized concrete can keep its integrality with no disintegration, and it shows distinct destruction mode comparing with reference concrete;3) rubberized concrete has good abrasion resistance. The abrasion resistance of concrete can be increased by 1~2 more times with the addition of appropriate rubber powder, and the wear resistance can be reduced. And the abrasion resistance may improve further when the volume content of rubber powder continued to increase;4) the main factors on influencing concrete's abrasion resistance may be: strength, elastic modulus and volume content of aggregate and cement, particle size and volume content of rubber powder, and relative proportion between ingredients;5) rubberized concrete had better abrasion resistance than silica fume concrete which was widely used in engineering, and this result was confirmed by other researchers;6) this study provided a new technical way for preparing high abrasion resistance concrete.
