The urban development patterns pursuing the economic growth, have caused more and more problems to urban spatial structure. The problems such as chaotic layout of urban functions, irrational structure of land use, disordered transportation system, and eco-space loss are deteriorating, contradictions of spatial development are more pronounced, thus leading to urban environmental problems, traffic problems, social problems and security issues continued to increase. In the background of globalization and information technology, building sustainable cities, harmonious cities has become a common goal of urban development in every country. As the material carrier of urban development, urban geographic space is the comprehensive reflection of human economic, social and cultural activities, so optimizing the urban space and building a sustainable and harmonious urban spatial structure are the only way to promote the harmonious development of cities. Looking at home and abroad researchs on managing urban spatial structure, Western scholars proposed a number of management policy tools, but because of the different urban development environments between China and Western, the operability of these policies is reduced. And the Chinese scholars studies are mostly focused on a specific city as an example, optimize some concrete measures, lacking the of integrity analysis of China's urban spatial structure. The objective of this study sought to establish a set of management policy system to optimize the urban spatial structure, and thus we can optimize urban space and promote the building of a harmonious society with this management system. The paper analysis is carried out based on this goal.First, the thesis is in the China and West urban spatial structure as an object, in accordance with historical time of their respective development, analyze the course of their evolution, the features of the spatial structure systematically, summarize the evolution law of urban spatial structure.Secondly, based on the former analysis, the paper point out three main roles to change spatial structure: governments, businesses and residents, summariz the four kinds of impact factors in the evolution of spatial structure: natural-based force, the driving motivation of the government, economic and social driving force, and discusses self-organization and being organized, gather and spread, positive and negative feedback mechanisms when the roles of the subject and these factors impacting with the urban spatial structure, then build out the coupling mechanism of action of the evolution of urban spatial structure. Third, The paper analyze the general issues in China's current urban spatial structure, address that China's urban spatial structure will be ecological, sustainable and harmonious urban space structure under the globalization, information technology, marketization and decentralization of the development environment, combined with the action mechanism analysis of urban spatial structure evolution, constuct a more comprehensive management policy system to optimize urban spatial structure, which includes the space policy, economic policy, social policy and environmental policy. Then, the paper take Dongguan as an example, analyze the development of the Dongguan City of space history, the dynamic mechanism of the evolution and problems existed, discuss the new development environment and the future development trend of its urban space, under the guidance of the space management policy system established in the previous chapter, submit specific spatial management policies to optimize spatial structure of Dongguan city. Finally, the concluding part of the thesis is a summary of the preceding analysis and to propose relevant recommendations for future research.
