Because of its good mechanical properties, the steel tube truss structure has beenwidely used in industrial, stadiums and other large-span structures and offshore platformstructure.National and international experts have carried out retional work on the tubetruss structure.Asteel tube truss structure subject to impact load is taken as the main objectof this research. In this study, experiments and numerical method are combined. Thefollowing aspects are included:(1) Experiments of trusses were conducted to study the effect of different impactpositions on impact force resistance, internal force development and the formation ofplastic hinge. The time history of load-displacement curve and the failure modes wereobtained. A high speed camera was used to record the whole damage process ofspecimens.(2) Using finite element software ABAQUS, numerical models are built to simulatethe impact process. The simulation results and the experimental are in good agreement. The comparison further validates the accuracy ofABAQUS finite element model.(3) The nonlinear finite element method is used to simulate the deformationdevelopment and failure model of the truss structure at mid-span and joint under impactloading. On the base of analyzing overall displacement and time history curves of impactload for pipe truss structure at mid-span and joint under impact loading, the developmentof deformation and energy dissipation are clarified. Finally, failure mechanism of trussunder different positions impact load are compared.
