Problems And Solutions Of Road Greening In One Ring Road Of Xi'an

The urban green space is the only infrastructure that has life. It is not only the basis for the man, the city and the nature to coexist in harmony, but also the critical factor to improve the urban living environment and maintain natural ecological balance. The ecologicalization of urban green space construction has been a significant part of both urban green space system planning and urban planning in the last few years. It is the basic requirement for social development, as well as the trend of modern city development. In recent years, with the continuous development of urban construction, people’s demand for traffic road greening has been growing higher and higher. Not merely do they request the road to be safe, fast, economic, convenient and comfortable, but do they ask for spiritual enjoyment of beauty out of it. Meanwhile, being surrounded by a friendly-environment living condition can meet people’s desperate needs for breathing fresh air and enjoying calmness whenever they want. The road green space accounts for a considerable proportion in green space rate and green coverage rate of urban greening in the aspect of ecological impacts. If both sides of the urban road are planted with arbors, fruit trees, bushes, brushwood, forage grasses and flowers, and built with small gardens as well, it could on the one hand beautify the environment, purify the air, absorb the noise, improve the travel condition and facilitate the road safety, it could on the other hand stabilize the roadbed, shade the road and prolong its service life. The flow of people and traffic is huge due to the restraint of traditional road pattern within the First Ring Road of Xi’an. Together with the ongoing project of old city transformation, the degree of environmental pollution within the First Ring Road is more severe than other areas. Therefore, it is a pressing matter of the moment to improve road conditions and road landscapes by means of road greening.The main content of this paper is divided into five chapters:The first part is the Introduction which brings forward the background and objective of studying road greening problems within the First Ring Road of Xi’ an. During the process of Xi’an’s proposal to build an "eco-city" and "international metropolis", the role played by urban road green space as an influential factor cannot be ignored. Therefore, it puts forward the necessity of studying road greening problems in this area by figuring out the green area and green coverage rate within the First Ring Road of Xi’an so as to make comparison of differences.The second part mainly describes the road greening conditions of Xi’an. First of all, it traces back to the evolution of Xi’ an’s road greening history on the basis of analyzing locational and geo-environmental conditions of Xi’an. Secondly, it does detailed statistics on roadside trees about their ecological habits, landscape uses and distribution situations alongside some of the roads under the current road pattern within the First Ring Road of Xi’an. And then it analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of tree selection.The third part and the fourth part are two of the most important parts in this whole paper. These two chapters thoroughly analyz the road greening problems within the First Ring Road of Xi’ an from four perspectives provided by road green space construction, i.e. environmental protection function, traffic safety function, landscape design function and plant maintenance management. Accordingly, these two chapters gives highly operational comments and suggestions which to some extent provide references for road greening planning and designing in this area.The fifth part is the Conclusion which sums up the whole paper and gives prospect of development for this research. The urban green space construction of Xi’an is a systemic project which involves many aspects, the road greening problem within the First Ring Road is just a small part of it It is hoped that, with further adjustment and renovation, the urban green space construction of Xi’ an can make the best of its superior natural and geographic environment conditions. It is also expected that Xi’ an could soon become the "eco-city" and "international metropolis" with a comfortable and beautiful living environment.
