Movement is one of the basic behavior patterns for human beings. As a place of habitation for man, architecture has long been considered as a permanent fixed artificiality, and eternity is taken as an inherent quality of architecture. Since 1950s, as people’s perceptions of architecture become diversified, mobile architecture began to emerge as a new kind of architecture. Due to its movability, this kind of architecture displays its unique value under the complex contemporary background.Based on movability of mobile architecture, this paper explores the mobile architecture from two aspects of theoretical argumentation and experimental design. First of all, this paper sorts out relevant concepts of mobile architecture and specifies the scope of the study; secondly, this paper analyzes related theories of four representative architects and scholars from perspectives of architectural philosophy and methodology and explores the theoretical basis of mobile architecture from multiple angle; then, combined with a large number of movable architecture cases, this paper dissects the functional, ecological, adaptable and economic advantages of movable architecture, and discusses six common movements for movable architecture:wheeling, floating, flying, light-weighting, dismounting and deforming; finally, with Nanjing University of the Arts as a base, the author conducts experiments on mobile architecture from perspectives of the establishment of design concept, the formation of morphology, the deepening of design and the expression of results to validate the acquired theoretical knowledge and offer relevant feedback. It is hoped that this study will attract more people’s attention to mobile architecture, jointly promote the diversified development of the architecture field and contribute to the sustainable development of the human society.
