The boom system is a main part to bear load on the upper part of all-terrain crane. The use performance of whole crane is extremely depended on its manufacture’s level. As the boom system of all-terrain crane is generally flexible, it is bearing own weight and cargo’s load when it works, the case leads to the large deformation and stress which belong to the geometric nonlinear issue, this issue will affect the working performance of the boom system. Therefore, the study has put forward a method that simplifies modeling for boom system by combining traditional structure design method with finite element method. It is helpful to provide convenience for fast design for boom system of the all-terrain crane. This method is used to put truss structure simplified structure by counting equivalently the cross-section’s moment of inertia and the cross-section’s areas. In this process, webs and chords of influence should be taken into account. And it can deal with reasonably the boom hinge points locations and connections of all parts. We establish the finite element model of boom system. The major research works are as follows:(1) According to structural features and force of boom system, establishing the finite element model for boom system, and doing ANSYS linear strength analysis, eigenvalues buckling analysis and geometric nonlinear analysis for the finite element model.(2) This process that is establishing the finite element model is difficult and it will need long time, so this paper has put forward the simplified modeling approach for simplifying telescopic boom and truss jib, and verifying the feasibility of simplified scheme by contrastive analyzing simple model and the finite element model.(3) Counting equivalently the cross-section’s moment of inertia of boom of constant section and variable section, comparatively analyzing the results by energy method and analytical method, verifying the accuracy of the analytical method.
