Slow And Wonderful Road - An Investigation On The Slow Space Design Of The East Of Nanjing

With the rapid development of modern cities,the modern transportation connect with the outstretched urban space, shaping the pace of modern city life. However, despite the motor vehicle traffic is becoming a part of everyday life, the slow traffic is still essential part of urban life. Therefore, the advantage and the disadvantage of the slow space are very important. Sometimes, people are willing to walk or take bicycle, but the terrible road circumstance made them give up.From this perspective, combined with the author’s familiar urban space in Nanjing, this paper is to investigate the east district of Nanjing city, and attempt to obtain the standard of "appropriate slow space". Article begins with personal research interest of urban space and the trend of “slow”, introducing the concept of slow and slow space area, and analyzes the existing laws and regulations of slow traffic, relevant policy and some successful cases. Involving each road in Nanjing slow investigation focuses on space usage and the actual text of the pavement characteristics, as well as environmental psychology theory, deeper analysis are made to show the behavior and psychology of slow walker.This article is aimed to evaluate the various elements of the slow space from user’s perspective, and discuss the potentially positive or negative factors towards slow traffic. At last part of this paper, a design concept is proposed to build a ideal slow space, hoping for guidance towards design pratice.
