Since the Industrial Revolution, motorized transport has been widely favored with its speed and the way of travel on foot has been gradually replaced by motorized transport, resulting in a change of urban space. Urban problems become serious in several ways as the disappearance of traditional urban scale, the convergence of urban space images, the decline of urban cultural identity, the monotonous city life and the indifferent relationships. People began to pay attention of the urban pedestrian space to wake up the vitality of urban space. Then, many cities are planning and constructing lots of pedestrian area to meet the needs of pedestrian activity. But there are still so many problems in the current pedestrian area that it cannot fully support the activities of walking, such as the crowded traffic, the unfavorable people space scale and the poor space environment.Firstly, the paper analyzes the theoretical study of urban pedestrian space and development of urban pedestrian area, establishing the theoretical foundation for the research. Then, it determines the pedestrian space in the Nanjing Confucius Temple as a research object and do the field survey. The paper summarizes several problems of the pedestrian space from seven dimensions such as history, function layout, space structure and streamline organization, space scale, building style and the facilities and landscape. Finally, the paper propose three appropriate remediation strategies including the construction of spatial pattern, the shaping of space form and the upgrade of space environment, to solve the problem of the pedestrian space in the Nanjing Confucius Temple block. The paper explores the connection of the spatial features of the urban pedestrian area. And it provides reference for domestic cities in dealing with similar problems.
