Large scale workpiece is a key component of advanced manufacturing equipment, which has been widely used in electric power, shipbuilding, metallurgy, petrochemical, machinery and national defense. Large scale workpiece and its components in the work usually need to bear the complex stress, impact vibration and heavy load, etc, the quality of the equipment directly affect the reliability and safety of the equipment operation. In order to guarantee the quality of the large workpiece and its equipment, it is necessary to detect the defects of the air, crack, inclusion, crack, bubble. Ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive testing technology, which has the advantages of high penetration, high detection accuracy and no radiation damage to human body. Traditional manual ultrasonic detection method is big labor intensity for the staff, low detection efficiency and accuracy, prone to false detections and so on, it is difficult to meet the requirements of large scale workpiece’s automatic detection. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an ultrasonic automatic inspection system for large scale workpieces with high efficiency and accuracy.In this paper, a design scheme of multi channels ultrasonic automatic detection system based on Ethernet is proposed, and the system is designed. ARM chip S3C2440 and XC3S500E chip FPGA is used to design the hardware circuit of multi channels ultrasonic automatic detection terminal, which mainly includes the acquisition control module, processing module, motion control module, mechanical execution module and eight ultrasonic probe. On the ISE Xilinx platform, the software of ultrasonic acquisition control module (FPGA) is programmed with VHDL language, it realizes the functions of the automatic acquisition of multi-channel ultrasonic signal; In Linux system, the software of processing transmission module (ARM) is programmed by using C language and multi thread programming, it realizes the functions of the motion control of ultrasonic probe and the ultrasonic acquisition, and the synchronous of ultrasonic acquisition and ultrasonic probe movement;UDP/IP protocol is used to realize remote communication between PC and Multi channels ultrasonic automatic detection terminal, In the LabVIEW environment, The upper computer software is written by the G programming language and the modular programming method, it realizes the functions of ultrasonic signal processing, ultrasonic probe motion control and A/B/C scan imaging. The experimental results show that the system can realize the functions of automatic acquisition of the ultrasonic signal, remote transmission and real-time imaging of the internal defects of large scale workpieces.This system has many advantages such as high detection accuracy, high efficiency, good hardware extensions and operating convenience. This system has widely application value in electric power, shipbuilding, metallurgy, petrochemical, heavy machinery, national defense and other fields.
