Concrete structures strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced plastic sheet (CFS) is a new retrofit method in the field of civil engineering. In this paper, based on the experiment of six simply supported reinforced concrete beams strengthened in shear with externally bonded carbon fiber sheet, the failure type, the ultimate shear strength and the influence factors that are related to shear strengthening effect are researched and analyzed. The influence factors include width and spacing of CFS, layers of CFS and concrete strength. The test results show that the shear strength is obviously increased and the ductility of these beams is also improved. According to the analysis of the experimental results, a formula for estimating the shear capacity is proposed, Comparing with experimental data, the calculation results show good agreement.
