ABSTRACTIn this paper the characteristics of multi-coiled spiral pipe of steam condenser is discussed and a reasonable coil geometry is presented. In order to compare its behavior with smooth pipe and single-coiled-spiral pipe finite element analysis (FEA) and a series of experiment with the same pipe diameter have been carried out. Heat transfer, resistance characteristics and temperature difference between inlet and outlet are calculated and analyzed by means of commercial software package FLUENT-3D? Laboratorial experiment and industrial testing comparing multi-coiled-spiral pipe with smooth pipe and single-coiled-spiral pipe have also been accomplished. Theoretical and experimental results show that the effect of thermal transfer for three-coiled-spiral pipe used in condenser of 100MW steam turbine made in China can obviously be improved. It is well known that flowing resistance of single-coiled and multi-coiled-spirals is larger than the smooth pipe. However, the flowing resistance of three-coiled-spiral pipe is smaller than single-coiled spiral pipe, which was applied in a lot of power plants. According to analytical conclusion demonstrated in this paper the three-coiled-spiral pipe should be suggested to apply in steam condenser of power plants.
