In the checking of vessel's local strength, experience formula is very convenient but short of accuracy under the loading condition of awkward and lengthy cargo, while the finite element method used during the stage of designing is most probable to be accurate, however atthe same time requires a lot of calculations and advanced hardware which bring high expenses, further more it is so complex that one can hardly expect it to be used on board. How to find out a method which can not only guarantee the operation safety of the vessel but also make full use of the stowage capability of the vessel is a problem concerned by the ship-owner, cargo owner, classification society and the port authority.Based on a detailed research on the local structural characteristics as well as the distribution of the internal stress of ships under the condition of awkward and lengthy cargo transportation, the author managed to develop a comparatively easy way to ensure the vessel with considerable accuracy without expensive and complex calculations. Calculation examples are provided to prove the validity of this method.
