This article mainly deals with the variations of ship's stability and longitudinal strength in ballast water exchange at sea and limitations of ballast water exchange at sea.Based on the IMO A 868 (20) Resolution-The Guidance For The Safety of Ballast Water Exchange At Sea and the requirements of rules for vessel ballast water control and management in some countries concerned, the general methods of ballast water exchange at sea are established. This article also illustrates the principle of the harmful sea creatures spreading through ships' ballast water, and describes the important points to take into account in taking in ballast water to control the spread of harmful sea creatures or organisms. The general plans of ballast water exchange at sea are also a part of my discussion. The ballast exchanging sequence described in this article not only ensures safety of ballast water exchange and navigation of larger vessels, but also reduces the amount of calculation work and blindness of the Chief Mate in ballast water exchange.
