The theory of cellular automata, proposed by the famous scientist Von Neumann in the 1950's,has developed from its original purpose of imitating the self-organization phenomenon of biological system into a widely used method. For the ten years of late, the cellular automata has made the new progress in hydy nimiee dynamices. By gaining the moment equations from lattice Boltzmann equation and using Chapman-Enskog expansion, the fluid dynamices equation and energy equation of 13-bit lattice gas automata model with polyvelocity have been deduced. The validity of the model using for non-isothermal fluid dynamics has been proved. Simulation results for non-isothermal flow pass plate have been shown. The spatial correlations in a fluid subjected to an external temperature gradient have been computed by using cellular automata simulations of a simple lattice-gas model with temperature. But, this theory is found limitedly applied to mechanics. Hence, the paper is to focus on the feasibility of CA to structures of bar system. In the paper the characteristics and dividing methods of cells, as well as some relevant computer programmes are given, which have proved to be correct by several examples of structures of bar systemThe calculation of the new method is simpler because it need not form the global stiffness matrix that is necessary in FEM, and solve the boundary problems of partial differential equations. The numerical computing results show that the new method has not only rapid speed of convergence to nodal displacement, stress and strain of elements, but also good prospects on solving problems in solid mechanics.
