The claim of protecting our environment and the threat of decreasing oil reserves, have driven people to consider the power problem of the future cars. After exploring some kinds of new fuels, new energy and new power, the electrical vehicle has been one of the main choices. At present, the most feasible compromise in applying a combination of new and old technology is provided by hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), which provides the benefits of both electric vehicle (EV) and traditional internal combustion vehicle, while minimizing the limitations of each. HEV is the most feasible solution to solve the energy and pollution problems. The parameter(engine power electromotor power and ratio of driveline)of powertrain system for HEV have notable influence on dynamical performance economical fuel consumption and emission of vehicle. As regard as HEV, Whether HEV achieves the standard of economy and environment depends directly on rational matching of the parameter of powertrain.Firstly, this paper gives a detailed analyze about the different hybrid powertrain configurations and types of hybrid electrical vehicles, and summarizes the characters and using sites of all the different configurations. Followed, the paper analyzes several operation modes of the engine and electric motor and different control strategies. The results shows that, with proper selection of the powertrain parameters, the vehicle can satisfy the urban and highway driving with a small internal combustion engine, a small battery pack and a single gear transmission. Moreover, the vehicle does not need to charge the battery pack from the electricity network for keeping its battery SOC at a reasonable level. Then paper introduces a method by which the engine size and the speed reduction ratio from the engine to drive wheels based on the cruising mode (one of the two basic modes for an electrically peaking hybrid vehicle's operation). The electromotor power rating and the motor gear ratio to the drive wheels can then be determined based on the acceleration and gradeability. The resultsshow that a simple single-gear transmission would be a good selection for overall performance. The paper optimizes the parameter of powetrain system according to the above method. The results bring the improvement of economy and emission for HEVs.
