Digital image processing is the subject with bright prospects. In recent years, digital image processing is being applied in the field of boiler furnace flame detecting gradually and pioneers a new realm of boiler flame detecting in power plant. Flame image sensor is an important part of flame detecting system. In this paper, a sensor with advanced image optical fiber and CCD camera is designed. Emphasis is put on designing and calculating the cooling system of the image sensor to run safely. At present image compression is one of the key techniques in digital image processing field. Considering many important characteristics of flame images, the software based on wavelet transformation is devised and developed. In this software, after a flame image has been decomposed by wavelet transform, low frequency sub-image and high frequency sub-image can be quantified and encoded with the LZW method. The compressed image can be delivered to other computer though the telephone lines by Modem.
