From the aspects of the number and cost of project, culverts account for quite a few proportion and they are one of the most important parts of traffic engineering . Traditional concrete culvert pipes have some defections which can not be resolved , such as short life-spa , poor corrosion-resistant ability , water leakage from adapter and so on .. In this paper, a new composite material named Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic Mortar Pipe (GFRPMP)was researched , by using this material the defections related to concrete pipes can be conquered and notable economic benefit be gained .GFRPMP is a new pipe occurred in 1970s,and it is a flexible composite material pipe being spread in present time . Undoubtly , the rapid development of GFRPMP will impact the large-diameter cement pipe , cast iron pipe and steel pipe. GFRPMP is made up of glass fibers , thermosetting plastic and quartz sand by certain technology . It can be divided into three types as distance twining centrifugal pouring and continuous twining . GFRPMP has many advantages such as low weight , high strength , small resistance for liquid transport, better corrosion-resistant convenient to transport and installation , long service life , moderate comprehensive cost and low maintenance cost.In this paper , the excellent performances of GFRPMP were generalized , the internal and external research and application condition were described . On basis of the content mentioned above , the feasibility that using GFRPMP as culvert in traffic engineering was analyzed . From the aspects of production technique, structure analysis , construction technique and finite element analysis.As a important scientific and technical project of Hubei Province , the project was supported by Traffic bureau of Jingzhou district . And in Sep .2002,the first culvert made by GFRPMP in China was completed on the road from the Garden of Jingzhou district to Baling mountain . The dead-load experiment and the flow up to the service state in half a year prove that the culvert can meet the demand of structure security and normal usage . It is a good example for substituting GFRPMP for traditional concrete culverts .The conclusions in this paper have certain significance for the spread of GFRPMP . By comparing the data from experiment and the data from finite element analysis , proved that finite element analysis can imitate the status of GFRPMP bearing loading . So the structure of GFRPMP can be designed by use of finite element analysis . By this way , the experiment cost can be saved and the design period shorten.
