A Sakyamuni tower is investigated on the dynamic characteristics as a typical example of the ancient timber architecture by means of FEM numerical analysis in this thesis.1) The mortise and tenon joint of the structure is replaced by a special beam-element group in the finite element model. The stiffness of the element-group joint can be determined by mode analysis.2) Both gravity simulation and modal analysis of the structure show that, it is the element on the second floor and third floor that bore the heavy burden and took on large deformation under the loadings. The inherent frequencies and vibration models obtained from the mode analysis are consistent well with the tested data.3) Seismic response simulation results show that the seismic loadings exert much burden on the second floor of the tower with the seismic intensity increasing. That is, the second floor of the tower must be damaged more seriously than other floors when acted by seismic loadings. The present deformation of the tower shows the same phenomena.
