In the process of the city constructive adjustment and societal transformation, the decayed urban historical area has become a popular subject of city research and cultural revival around the world nowadays. The starting point of this study is to recognize the historical area, lead urban design to the research of historical area, and promote the overall revival of space and environment in historical areas.Starting from the fundamental research, this paper first briefly elaborates relates concepts and connotations, analyses the valuation, environmental feature and form trait of historical areas, expound the relation between historical area and urban development. Then analyses and studies the types, characteristics and internal factors of such decays. Meanwhile, it probes into the chances of redevelopment in light of history and society. Based on the many-faceted study in the revival of historical areas, and following the probe into the redevelopment cases from western developed countries, makes comparison between Chinese and foreign countries in the development, feature and design in historical areas.How to form the dual benefit between redevelopment and physical environment modeling is significant in guaranteeing the realization of urban historical area' s sustainable development. This paper emphasizes the function of urban design, and deliberates the tactics, principles and methods of urban design in historical areas, then from the physical environment modeling of the areas, makes an overall elaboration from macro level-space design, midlevel-street and architecture design and micro level-activity system design, and expound the concrete apply of urban design tactics in the design of historical areas.The paper combines with many study cases and living examples, uses them in the practice operating of historical areas, and strives for a continuous, dynamic and open research way in historical areas.
