A new model of circular worm conjugated with roller teeth is presented. The worm gear's ball teeth mesh with worm teeth in rolling contact, and the ball teeth inlaid in gear body can rotate freely.The coordinate system for meshing theory analyzing roller (ball) conjugated worm drive has been set up, based on which the equations of contact line and worm tooth profile is induced. Helix angle equations, limited curve equations and induced normal curvature equations are also obtained.The helix angle, the contact line, the limit function and the induced normal curvature are discussed with the aid of Mathematic. The axial section shape of worm is studied. The accurate modeling for worm tooth profile is worked out with the aid of SolidWorks.The assembled parts structure of worm gear is put forward. The drive parameters are selected by optimized design. The drive structure is designed. The transmission parts are simulated in three-dimension with the aid of SolidWorks, and are further assembled in simulation. Based on CosmosWorks, the worm drive intensity is analyzed with finite elements methods.Based on the principle of worm to worm wheel meshing, the enveloping methods of manufacturing the worm by flyblade and grinding the worm by ball end grinding wheel have been put forward.The manufacturing for the new retarder is performed. A gear machine tool of model 3150 is reequipped, and the worm is manufactured. The worm gears are manufactured in a numerical control tool in order to guarantee the accuracy of tooth positions. The whole mechanism is manufactured at last.Experimental study on the new mechanism is performed. It has been found that all the 16 teeth had taken part in gearing in well-distribution. This proves that the manufacturing accuracy of worm and worm gear is higher, while the manufacturing methods are feasible. The new model mechanism works smoothly, and its efficiency is higher with lower loads, whose figure reaches 92%. The experimental results are analyzed, and a modifying scheme is presented.
