Regionalism is one of the basic attributions of architecture, expressing the relationship between a building and the locality. It is also a key feature to be presented in material and spiritual form in housing design. The elements of regionalism lie in three aspects: natural condition, cultural environment and economic state.With long history and glorious culture progeny, Chengdu has its identical settlement environment and distinct dwelling tradition. However, globalization has being threatening the survival of traditional architectural heritage, and no more the designs of housing in Chengdu pay attention to the characters by which people can distinguish the city from any other region. As the result, crisis have emerged in the city, such as ecosystem crisis, identity crisis and user-character crisis. It is time to solve the problem that how to create housing been accommodated the requests of modem life and having specific regional features.Based on the theories of natural ecology, social ecology and economic ecology, this thesis analyzes the natural condition, cultural environment and economic state of Chengdu, and summarizes the achievements of traditional dwellings and the productions of housing design practice both in and out of China in nowadays. Then the author introduces the principles of housing design in Chengdu: holistic-design concept, limited-consume concept and tradition-respect concept. After that, there are three main strategies: harmonizing with the nature, inheriting and innovating local habitation culture and accomplishing the economic ecosystem. Further more, some concrete solution measures are suggested to effect as a whole framework. The ideal of the author is to explore a route to return to the nature and revive the culture of the locality.
