Owing to the existing Chinese railways possessing quite a lot sharp curves, in order to reduce the wheel/rail wear and to improve the curving behavior of the passenger car, a controllable radial bogie(CRB) is studied in this thesis.The control I able radial bogie is a kind of forced steering bogie, which uses the actuator mounted on the bogie frame to push or pull the steering mechanism according to the measured rel.ative angular displacement between the bogie and carbody so that the wheel set can be posed on the radial position.The mathematic model of the CRB is set up in this paper and the main parameters of the steering mechanism is determined by the calculation and analyse. With the studies of the dynamic curving performance of the passenger car with CRB, it is found that the CRB can improve the curving performance by reducing the angles of attack, reduction rate of wheel load, derailment coefficient and the wear work index between wheel and rail.The hunting stability of the passenger car with CRB is also studied in this thes is. It is found from calculation that the steering mechanism can suppling good longitudinal positioning for whee I set, so the hunting stability on straight track is enhanced. Therefore , the steering mechanism can settle the conflict between curving and hunting stability.Through the parameter studies of the curve radius, length of transition curve and running speed, the main parameters of the actuator are determined.
