The extremely harsh working conditions directly result in high thermal and mechanical loads in diesel engines' piston assemblies, and so due to high stress it becomes one of the most vulnerable components assembly in diesel engine. Piston assemblies' failures such as cylinder sticking, scoring, gumming, etc., greatly limit diesel engines' durability and reliability. Therefore, a successful product must be investigated on piston assembly's temperature field, mechanical stress field and deformation thoroughly in it's R & D period. Now, in IC engine research and development field, many kinds of FEA software packages are used to do such work. This paper shows the research on this issue with ANSYS 6.0, in which two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) analysis on 8E160 diesel engine's piston assembly was carried out. The full text is arranged as followed:1. Investigation on the present status in the FEA analysis field of diesel engine, analysis on correctness and validity of whole-coupling model, and views on future research.2. Detailed discussion on FEA methods used in the coupling model of IC Engine piston assembly and cylinder with the combination of the theoretic of FEA, and theoretical foundation for two- and three-dimensional FEA analysis of holistic coupling system of combustion chamber components.3. Analysis on two- and three-dimensional thermal-field of the coupling model of piston assembly and cylinder, including steady analysis and transient thermal analysis with 2-D and 3-D model and the stress and the deformation under the action of thermal load.4. Discussion on the concept of coupling and contiguity, and coupling and contiguity, and their significance in the FEA research field.5. Investigation on piston assembly's mechanical load and test computation on thermal load, including the discussion on the analysis on movement and structure dynamics of piston assembly.6. Summarization of the research, and expectations on future's work.
