This thesis is based on the research of material environments in colleges, and focuses on the communicational space of modern colleges. By analysis of the important ideas and historic developments of the communicational space patterns, the thesis tries to summarize an experienced context in the communicational setting of modern colleges. Also, using theories with the relationship between environment science and human behavior leads to a method of analysis and evaluation of the improvement in designs for communicational space. In the new period o, it would have a realistic meaning to the renewal of communicational space in colleges for our country as a whole. With the development of college educations in our country this 90s, researches about communicational space have been get enough attentions. By study of the referenced data, this thesis summarizes the prevenient research about communicational patterns on campus, so as to provide some useful reference for the practice of our own country in special transformation period. While the point of view and methods can be also acquired through reading correlative materials, they must be understood and tested by architectural instance. Here the writer also wants to sum up some effective principles about the communicational space design to provide innovation for architectural design not only in theories but also in practice. The main context and frame of the whole structure is concluded in page III.In the first chapter, the thesis put forward the research issue straightway in the exordium, sets forth the background and the significance of the study, demarcating the scope and the methods of the research. It also contains the important explanation of the meaning "communication" and the relationship between psychology and communication requirement of students in campus. This thesis is limited in a developmental type. The second chapter is about basic issues and historic evolvement of space patterns. In comparison of the communicational space on campus in our country or overseas, the aim is not to find out a material space form, but to search a relationship between out form and factors inside. In the third chapter, basic theories research firstly contains analysis to the relationship between environment science and human behavior. Then with study of two books: ((Life Between Buildings)) and ((Open Space Design)) , this chapter explained recapitulative rules about relationship between action and material setting, as to direct the academic analysis on communicational space. The topic of the fourth chapter is noumenal research about space pattern for modern campus. It contains researches macroscopical organizing and details of space "nodes" . Firstly, it is open space belonged to special buildings. Secondly, it contains specific interior space. The third part is open space not dependent on any buildings or used by fixed crowd. The fourth part is traffic space based on walking. The aim is to summarize an effective principles about the communicational space design. This chapter and chapter three are the emphases of the whole thesis.Chapter five conceives a possible space pattern suited to colleges of our country. The writer wants to bring forward the developments and renewal of patterns about communication space on modern campus.
