As it casting back, we find the history of cities development is indeed a process of constant renewal and remodel. Urban renewal has been a main project to which most governments had been paying attention in 20th century and also a branch of social engineering. In modem times, old buildings are dominating objects of urban renewal and remodel, and they should not all be reconstructed, but to be reused according to material, historic, cultural and ecological factors. Old buildings could not only look brand-new, but to some aspect could own some superiorities and features that new building might never own after being repaired, reconditioned or changed its function. Hence, it might do good to urban ecological environment, to keep in inherent context of urban and to create active urban space accord with modem times to make full use of old buildings. Thus, the outcome of renovation might be treated as "second building". Based on the status quo and problems, I emphasized on the history, theoretical basis, modes and systematic plan of architectural reuse in this dissertation, with reference to some cases to present the blueprint of remodel of old building in China and foreign countries, to probe the main issues existing in China, and try to put forward some suggestions on the object, renewal process, manner and strategy of old architectural reuse. All what I aimed to do is to find out a practicable way suitable to China in process of architectural reuse.
