Excitation system, as an important part of a synchronous generator, directly affects the reliability and stability of generator operating. Excitation system faults are main causes of generator electrical emergency. In order to detect early and avoid misadjusting, it is necessary to carry out faults real-time monitoring and diagnosis in the excitation system.Excitation system consists of power units and excitation adjusters; however, digital excitation adjusters are short of faults online monitoring and diagnosis for power units by now. Schemes, which can implement faults real-time monitoring and diagnosis for excitation power units using DSP chip is proposed in this paper based on DSP excitation adjuster, besides, the corresponding device is developed. Related knowledge ofinexcitation system faults diagnosis and technique dynamic are stated firstly in this paper. Secondly, the characteristic , structure and application of DSP are introduced. Then the method of fault diagnosis in three-phase thyristor converter bridge based on spectrum analysis is discussed. And the fault model was simulated and analyzed again in the method, also fault diagnosis criterion is gained in the condition. Then design and implementation of both hardware module and software for the device is demonstrated in detail. Experiments of quantity of electric charge analysis and fault diagnosis by the device are carried out to show that it is not only able to run reliably, but also provide fine performance in excitation adjusting and online fault diagnosis.
