Searching For The Tradition

The essence of architecture is to serve people and satisfy the demandsof the life. The housing is the origin of Architecture. Residence------theregional housing reflects the true status of the people who are or were living in it. The ancient residence in the south of Anhui is the representative of the Ming & Qing Dynasty housing which is still preserved well. With the development of economy & science in the modern society, people have improved the level of their life and changed the way & thought of the life. So the residence in the south of Anhui also has changed its appearance unconsciously.Today, most people realize the importance of protecting the ancient residence, but the old housing has being declining. On the other hand, local residents are building the new residence passionfully. They appear not to care about the tradition.The author has investigated the status quo of the ancient residence & the new residence in the south of Anhui on the spot, and tries to search for the tradition from the residential life by comparing & analyzing the internal & external reasons why caused those changes.The life includes the tradition, new life will create new tradition. Tradition needs not only to learn from the past, but also to look forward. Building is just parts of the life, which can't express the tradition entirely. Only ones understand & join the life, the tradition can be comprehended & experienced indeed.
