Controls to hydro-generator is include manipulation of the rotational speed or freguency,output active power from hydraulic turbine, generator terminal voltage and the reactive power exporting from the generator. Traditionally, These tasks are achieved by hydraulic turbine governor and the excitation system which are designed and arranged respectively. With the developing of electric power network and improving of manufacture technology to huge generator, the requirement of long distance high voltage transmission to generator controller becomes severer. Meanwhile, the rapid development of computer science make it possible to control various state variables of generator sets generally. This paper established a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output)model of hydro-generator based on the Multi -variable frequency control theory firstly, and then a decoupling design is proposed.The main work and the research results are:1. A general controller model based the traditional controller is established after combining characteristics of traditional controller and the latest achievement such as PSS(Power System Stabilizer).The controller proposed has an advantage on the economy aspect. It reconstructs only the building part of control signal, with the execution and magnification parts unchanged. The fact that the original investment of enterprise is protected makes the spread and application of general controller facility.2. Based on the multivariable frequency control theory, a multi-variable computer-aided design software is designed using Visual Basic 6.0 after decoupling the controller model, the precompensation matrix, the dynamiccompensation matrix and the feedback matrix are obtained.3. General controller model and its Dynamic simulation are accomplished by MATLAB. Simulation results show the better features of the controller proposed.4. A hardware configuration of general controller and its control algorithms blocks are presented taking nowadays computer techniques and practice into account. Then different control schemes to different operation states of general sets are constituted. The controller mentioned is satisfied with generator sets ordinary operation requirements.
