As an available method for complex phenomena and data field, the technique of visualization has become a hotspot in engineering research. In this paper, a visualization model basing on particle system has been put forward to visualize the combustion process in internal combustion engine. This model includes three sub-models, that is, flame diffusing visualization sub-model, turbulence sub-model, and fuel property sub-model.In the flame diffusing visualization sub-model, flame particle system is adopted to track the spread of flame front surface in the combustion of internal combustion engine. The front surface is comprised of lots of flame particles. The flame profile varied with the movement of particles. As for the compression ignition engine, a spray particle system is defined to simulate the fuel spray phenomena, and spray particles are used to describe the spray fuel profile.In order to visualize the turbulence phenomena in combustion, a virtual turbulence field sub-model has been constructed. The turbulence field contributed to the flame diffusing particles. Therefore, the motion of a particle is changed, and the profile of flame front surface becomes much more wrinkled. Moreover, this causes the flame diffusion more quickly.Because temperature and density are varied with time, it is supposed that temperature and density are the properties of fuel. A voxel sub-model is presented to describe the visualization of fuel property. The space of combustion chamber is divided into many voxels. For each voxel, it is not only filled with fuel, but also has its own properties, such as temperature and density. As soon as the flame front surface reaches the voxel, the properties will be changed, and these changes will be shown on the screen by applying different colors and transparences.The data structure of visualization model is given and a temperature-color mapping table is created. By using the combustion visualization model, the 3D dynamic visualization for both spark ignition engine and compression ignition dual fuel engine are realized.Finally, all of works in this paper are summed up, and the future works are prospected.
