A Study On The Outdoor Environmental Design Of Historic Pedestrian Mall

High historic values, complete historic scenes and comprehensive functions of shopping, rest and entertainment have made historic pedestrian mall become the district which has values such as social value, economic value and cultural value. But many aspects-the protection and utilization of the historic architecture, the inheritation and continuity of the historic blocks' context, the external image and whole scene of pedestrian mall, thefacility of urban life and recreation, and so on-still need to be improvedbecause of the inadequacy of realizing its comprehensive values and the defects to outdoor environmental design.The author provides the basic frame on the design of outdoor environment in historic pedestrian mall based on the theories in the design of outdoor space and environmental behavioral research, analyzing the characteristics of outdoor environment in Chinese traditional Commercial streets and the design models of outdoor environment in historic pedestrian mall, and several examples investigated and assessed. Then some methods of it are tried to probe into under the environment of modem city and urban life style from design concept, substantial elements, spacial organization, construction of artistic conception and image, inducing the feeling of place, unimpeded design, etc. It helps to improve the environment of historic blocks in the city and provide scientific foundation to the building of modern pedestrian mall.
