Assembly process is an important part of product life cycle and the main process of realizing the function of product. Over the past years, under the prompting of the manufacturing technology and information technology, research on assembly design and planning has made a rapid progress.This thesis described a computer aided assembly process planning system developed by us, which is a part of a long-term virtual assembly research project. As a partial achievement of this research project, the progress in assembly modeling, assembly process planning approaches and application system development is introduced in this paper.Firstly, as the basis of our methodology, we present a framework of an approach, semantic modeling for assembly planning, through applying semantic modeling approach into the field of assembly design and planning. Moreover, by using a three levels semantic (information) abstract, an assembly information model is given : ASSEMBLY=, and the corresponding architecture of methodology is described.Then, a rule-based assembly planning planner is introduced which utilizes the assembly information model as input model and can finish assembly process planning by the following processes: assembly structure analyzing, generating assembly precedence relationships set, generating probable assembly sequences and assembly path planning.Finally, the development of the computer aided assembly process planning system is introduced. Describe the architecture of the application system and meanwhile, on the basis of PTC Pro/Engineer, develop it used ANSI C and Pro/Toolkit. Moreover, a sample is used toprove the feasibility of the system.
