This work is a part of the project Study Of The Electrical Property And Testing Methods Of Smart Concrete For Traffic Monitoring System, supported by the National Natural Science Foundation. There are lots of traffic accidents, which are caused by overspeed driving. Traditional monitoring methods cannot meet the demands of large-scale traffic monitoring, for the high prices of the required survey instruments, such as radar equipments. A whole new measurement of vehicle-speed, based on the smart property of CFRC, is presented in this paper.A lot of subjects, such as science of materials and structures, electrotechnics, signal processing, are involved in this research. Firstly, the experience of CFRM study is summarized and experiments are carried out to improve the preparation technics and to get the appropriate proportion of the materials used. Secondly, the factors, which affect the conductivity and stability of CFRC, are investigated. And its smart property is studied with different CF contents and loading directions, and under elastic loading cycles. Finally, the working principle is presented. A research scheme is carried out and CFRC bars are made to investigate the measurement, including loading method, electrode layout, electrical resistivity testing methods, signal collection and processing etc.The monitoring system of vehicle-speed, based on CFRC, is innovative obviously. The results of the experiments show that its working principle is feasible. CFRC are structural and functional materials. The system can monitor not only the vehicle-speed, but also the weights and traffic flux. And it can even monitor the distortion and the damage of the road. The system is of low cost but multifunctional greatly. Therefore it is expansive for application. The research method is academically valuable.
