The membrane structure is a new style of the space structures. It is different from traditional structures in the idea and step of the design . This paper aims at understanding the mechanics characteristic of the membrane structures through the research of this problem. In this paper a new method of shape finding is put forward through the research of two kinds of ideas of shape finding. The shape finding of membrane structure can be applied with the general-purpose finite element package ANSYS, thus a key problem in the design of membrane structure is solved. The accurate calculation and analysis of the external loading and cooperative analysis becomes possible.Through the systematic parameter analysis of the static performance of membrane structure and the analysis of several real projects, the understanding of the force baring performance with external loads is more clear.By comparing two kinds of calculating model and studying the difference of the support stiffness to the influence of the shape finding and the analysis of the external loading of membrane structure. It is found that the prestress should be increased to reduce the loss of prestress with the deformation of the support. It is suggested that integer model should be applied in order to avoid heavy difference between the design and the practical during the analysis of the external loading .Large deformation will occur during the shape finding and analysis of the external loading, so geometrically nonlinear will be considered, which is the main character of membrane structure. How to control convergence is a key problem in nonlinear analysis. Several methods is put forward to control convergence by computing several real projects.
