Optimization method is one kind of new science and technology.lt has been applied in various realm of engineering design. A new subject named mechanism optimization design had been formed when it was combined with mechaism design and computer technique."Best optimization" is the goal of almost every designer or engineering project.In any design of engineering or product,the goal of best design was wanted by choosing a reasonable scheme or confirming parameters according to the requests of design.So,optimization design has good prospects of development and the appliance in the field of mechanism design.Recently years,there is a new optimization method named Genetic Algorithms (GA) which is based on the numbers of genus groups.This method is a kind of random searching method which simulated natural selection and evolution.Compared with traditional optimization method,Genetic Algorithms has two notable characters.One character is latent parallel and the other is seaching in the whole area.And Genetic Algorithms has some advantage which traditional method don't have,for example,in Genetic Algorithms we didn't need the calculation of grade.The optimization design of portal crane luffing system is the result that optimization design apply in engineering design,but because the engineering problem is complicated,the traditional optimization design method is not very successful.In this paper,the optimization of the single boom system with compensating pulley and level-balancing weight is studied.In the math model,the wire rope length encircled in the pulley and reel is considered,that enhance the optimization precision and introduce Genetic Algorithms,combine engineering tightly,that settle the difficult in the traditional optimization successfully. Programmer use MATLAB GAOT toolbox,it lets design focus on optimization problem itself but not compile programmer.For the sake of convenience,this paper introduces a new method of operating MATLAB with the technology of ActiveX Automation in VB.According to this method,it combines the visible interface in VB and the numeric analysis ability in MATLAB.The work of this paper has two aspects of significance:1. Combining the design of portal crane luffing mechanism,this paper set up the math model independently and synthetically of the single boom system with compensating pulley and level-balancing weight.Use Genetic Algorithms to optimize the model,the calculated results show as follows the Genetic Algorithms is effective and manipulable,the synthetically optimize is best than independently optimize. The optimization program of luffing mechanism was build,and this will be a useful tool in the design of crane.2. Combine the visible interface in VB and the numeric analysis ability in MATLAB.
