Honeycomb ceramic has high surface and lighter weight. It is good at the heat insulation, so it is suitable for various kinds of catalyst carriers. It is widely used for automotive emissions control, stationary emissions control, chemical processing and refining industries.Aim to the shortage of cordierite honeycomb which was used widely, we studied the procession to extruded alumina honeycombs for automotive emissions control in this work. Three sides of a question was mainly studied and discussed in the paper. (1)How to prefabricate mullite whisker formed in-site to enhance ceramics intensity, improve thermal-shock resistance by adoption zirconate and alumina to sinter mullite/ zirconia/alumina composite ceramics.(2) Studying on the plasticity of high alumina body materials. To improve the plasticity to find the best contents of the sample through using several kinds of binder in different content, discuss the factors influence the shaping of extrude honeycomb.(3)How to improve the stability of big-surface -Al2O3.The additive function and affection was studied on to mullite/zirconia/ alumina composite ceramics in the paper. V2O5 and AlF3 were confirmed to accelerate the forming of mullite whisker,ensure to enhance the toughness of samples, better heat thermal-shock resistance. The strength, micro-hardness, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal-shock resistancehave been tested . The results showed that:the strength is 172.80MPa,the micro-hardnes is 601.5, and the thermal expansion coefficient is 6.56 10-6C-1. The strong honeycomb ceramics was extruded using the above batch composition.The relation between property of samples strength, micro-hardness, thermal expansion coefficient,thermal-shock resistance and microstructure of composite ceramics were discussed by SEM ,XRD test. The function in composite ceramic and the effection on microstructure of the different series additive were studied.
