Non-linear load like electric arc furnace (EAF) is the mainly source producing harmonic in the power supply grid of the steel industry. On the other hand, reactive power impact is largely caused by heavy loads as rolling mills.Medium Plate Plant of Chongqing Iron & Steel has reconstructed technically the original two stand rolling mills(roughing mill and finishing mill)and changed DC drive system into AC frequency converter drive system. Increasingly harmonic and reactive impact and power electronics widely used, leads to lower power quality of the plant. This paper based on the supply grid of the Medium Plate Plant of Chongqing Iron & Steel has analyzed what causes unexpected harmonic and reactive impact as well as influence on equipments and grid, at the same time, calculate and simulate harmonic and reactive impact produced by the Cycloconverter of roughing mill in the plant. Based on above, a solution for compensation is made Static Var C ompensator, tailored to suit harmonic mitigation and reactive power compensation.Drawing a comparison among all sorts of SVCs, researching a suitable style for Medium Plate Plant to mitigate harmonics and compensate reactive power, we can work out the theory foundation for the management of the grid system.SVC(TCR) is adopted reactor in series with thyristor controlled by trigger to absorb reactive power, at the same time, equipped with Harmonic Filter in order to mitigate harmonic. The paper states the configuration, theory of operation and control, realization as well. With the Static SVC(TCR) in operation at the Plant, a way similar to rolling mill Cycloconverter supply system can be worked out to mitigate harmonic and compensate reactive power.
