ssWith the continuous development of Marine Industry, the amount of world-wide trade had rapidly increased and a great quantity of ship frequently cruise near the port or main way on the sea, the ship have also becoming more and more big and rapid. All of these have made the sea, spatially the port and main way, so crowd that the level of navigation decreased and maritime accidents increased step by step, which affected the peoples' safety and made property loss. At the same time, with the marine environment protection becoming more and more necessary, how to reduce the numbers of maritime accidents and extent of destroy made by that is a very important problem that need the marine department to resolve. The research and development of Geographic Information System (GIS), especially the appearing of ideal "Digital Earth" and "Digital Transportation", maybe provide the theory support and technology solution to change the bad circumstance of marine transportation and build a intelligent transportation system.The Geographic Information System (GIS) firstly appeared in sixties' 20th and developed with the same step of computer technology. GIS is the computer system created for the purpose of geographic study and making decision, which connect, manage, operate, analysis, simulate and display the spatial relatively data based on geographical spatial database and supported by software and hardware of computer. It also uses the way of analysis geographic model to timely provide all kinds of spatial and dynamitic geographic information. Currently GIS has been widely applied in many fields of industry and peoples' life in society. Geographic Information System for Transportation (GIS-T) is the information system for connecting, memorizing, managing, comprehensive analyzing and processing spatial information, and the application of GIS technology in transportation system, or in the other words, the integration of GIS and all kinds of technology of transportation information analyzing and processing system. While Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is the total name of transportation system in which transportation information system,communication network, global position system and intelligent analyzing and making decision applied. Marine ITS is the automatic and intelligent navigation and management system covering the technology of GIS, electronic and communication, computer and other information system. It also is one important part of the total ITS (including land, water, and air transportation) and the necessary need during the progress of realize informational and intelligently marine transportation.Made the study of marine ITS as the starting point, this thesis researched the theory and methods of application of GIS in marine transportation by developing a AIS (Automatic Identification System) information display system as a example. The main discussed and researched contents in this paper are the Automatic Route Planning and visualization of sailing in three dimensions and main research fruits in the project as following:1. Fulfilled the "Eagle Eye" function in Electronic Chart Display System;2. Fulfilled the function of Route monitoring and Alarm;3. Automatic Route Planning;4.
