This paper investigated the physical characteristics of the interior and imported bronze powders, the technique of ball milling and surface treatment of bronze powders. The relative factors on gloss of the metallic pigment were analyzed with glossmeter and SEM. Through surface modification of bronze powder, the effect of different surfactants on the wetting property and the leafing property of bronze powder were established. The polishing technique of powder was also studied. The results showed that:1. The hue and chromatic value of the imported powders were same as those of the interior powders. But compared with the imported powders, the Chinese powders had such disadvantages as wide size distribution, small coveringpower on water and low gloss.2. There were two reasons for the low gloss of bronze powder. One wasthe low leafing value and the irregullar orientation of bronze flake in oil. The other was the wide size distribution of the interior pigment, containing a large fraction of small powder(<3 um),which to some extent had a greatimpact on metallic gloss.3. Some important parameters of ball milling process were investigated, and a set of optimized technique was developed.4. In polishing process, the bronze powder flakes were flattened and polished. If the polishing process lasts too long, the flake size would be gradually decreased, which was in good accordance with the change of covering power on water.5. The relation between wetting property and leafing property wasestablished, the recognization for the metallic pigment leafing property theory was deepened, and the new methods to improve leafing property were put forward. The results provide the new trains of thought for surface treatment of bronze powder.Based on above results, the leafing value and gloss of bronze powder modified by FSA are improved greatly.
