The development of transportation is tie up with the development of the whole city. And the transportation problems are always the difficulty that disturbing people of all transportation fields. Traffic congestion, traffic security and environmental pollution have become the focus of social concern. As one of the primary methods to organize and control traffic flow, urban traffic control performs an important role in resolving the problems of transportation.From fixed time signal control system, responsive control system to adaptive control system, urban traffic control system has gone through several decades of development and continues developing with the development of technology. Nowadays informatization and high-tech technology develop rapidly. With the development of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), the scholars shift the research of urban traffic control to intelligent control and by the adoption of advanced technologies of automatic control and artificial intelligent to realize intelligent traffic control.This thesis just based on this point, the research is focus on Area-wide Cooperation control based on Agent as well as related information sharing and standardization issues.Chapter one is the research background of this thesis. The increase of the ownership and public travel demand aggravate the problem of traffic congestion, and the existing traffic control establishment can not satisfy the increasing demand of transportation. The emerging economic era of 21 century has also new demand for traffic control. ITS is come into being with the era, and be the direction of modern traffic. It is also thought the most effective method to solve the problem of transportation. How to improve traditional traffic control system and make it become a part of ITS is an urgency. Chapter two introduces the Agent theory. Agent is an important part of the research of the artificial intelligence. Multi-Agent technology has the characteristic of self-determination, distribution and cooperation, as well as the ability to self-organize, study and reasoning. Using Multi-Agent to solve practical problems has the advantage of robustness, reliability, as well as high efficiency of problem solving. It can be used to solve complicated work. When used to express practical system, Multi-Agent can express the structure, function and behavior character of the system by communication, cooperation, comprehension, harmonization, dispatch, administration and control between agents. The distribution character of the traffic control topology structure makes it suitable to adopt Multi-Agent technology, especially for those drastically changed traffic conditions (for example, traffic accidents). The primary cooperation types of Multi-Agent include horizontal cooperation, tree-structured cooperation, circulatory cooperation and hybrid cooperation. The form of cooperation is mainly task sharing and result sharing. The Multi-Agent cooperation adopted in this paper is a combination of horizontal cooperation and tree-structured cooperation as well as an integration of task sharing and result sharing.Chapter three is the framework construction of the system. According to the layered distribution cooperation character of Multi-Agent, this paper designed the structure of the signal control system of the city crossing road and the structure of urban express way control system, as well as the structure of urban traffic flow inducement system. All work is based on Agent. Every controlled intercrossing, ramp and in-vehicle terminal is thought to be an Agent. It makes full use of the self-control ability to cooperate and to decrease the control pressure of the sub unit. When necessary the tree-structured cooperation of the agent of the next layer is adopted to perform global optimization. The control system presents a hierarchy distributed control structure, which is favorable to realizing the function of distributed Area-Cooperation.
