The optimizing process of the cooling system of 8×8 military vehicle is presented in this paper. In the first round experiment, the problems of the adaptability of the diesel engine in hot area were exposed. By systematically analyzing these problems, using theoretical design, studying other countries' similar products and combining the special testing results, a series of solutions were proposed. These solutions include reducing the internal resistance of the cooling system, optimizing the flow and pressure characteristics of the water pump, increasing the cooling area of the radiator, and improving the air flow rate and pressure. Two new emergency cooling systems, that is cooling system with parallel warm blower and forced cooling system with water injection, were also designed. After the second round 8×8 military vehicle adaptability test in hot area hold by the General Armaments Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the results shows that the optimization of the cooling system is successful. The heat balance was achieved at all the gear position of the vehicle, and there is some heat reserve. The cooling capacity of the system can fulfill the harsh operation condition of the military vehicle.
