In the west of China, there are lots of high-pier bridges that cross the huge mountains and rivers. As the piers are too much higher than the others in the plain, this kind of bridges are more dangerous. So it is very important to monitor the healthy condition of these bridges, special the displacement of the top of pier. On the other hand, with the great progress in the field of the bridge health monitoring, the system must have the functions with data acquisition automatic and remote communication in bad environment for obtaining the real-time data and making the right decision in time. For the study on the health of high-pier bridges, we carried out a project and developed the system to monitor the condition of high piers of the Chongqing Xiang-jia-po Bridge.In this dissertation, the importance and necessity of monitoring the displacement of high piers of the Chongqing Xiang-jia-po Bridge are first presented, and many kinds of ways, such as Laser deflection meter,GPS and tilt meter are discussed.Then we focus on the tilt meter, discuss how to use it to get the displacement of the top of pier and assure that the tilt meter is the most appropriate way in this project. According to the condition of Xiang-jia-po bridge and requirement of monitoring, the architecture of the system was designed. These include the communication wet,hardware and software.For making the development more efficiency, system integration is an important way to realize our idea. In this part, we will focus on how to choose the key equipments, such as tilt meter and data acquisition, how to integrate them into a system and how to improve the performance of the whole system.Module program is a very important way in the software development. In the system, they are TCP/IP module for remote communication, clock module for obtaining the real time, data module for field data storage, field communication module for controlling the field equipments communication and main control module for integrating all the functions and running the system.Finally, for proofing application result of monitoring system, debugging is necessary and system was tested in the laboratory, then the system was installed and applied on the Chongqing Xiang-jia-po Bridge. After analyzing the returned data, monitoring system is proved to be running very good and the condition of high pier, special the displacement (tilt), is obtained and monitored correctly.
