The soft clay spreads over many places over all of China. More and more structures are built on soft clay foundation. With the rapid development of Chinese economy, the soft clay consolidation settlement problem is paid much more attention.Contrasted with other kinds of soil, the soft clay contains more water, and its void ratio is much higher. The coefficient of permeability of soft clay is also less than the common soil's. The other quality of the soft clay includes smaller shearing strength intensity and higher coefficient of compressibility and so on. Many factors influence the distortion of soft clay, which include the method that it comes into being and the history of settlement etc. In some cases when the traditional consolidation theory is applied to soft clay, it maybe causes error that is out of reason. This limitation had been proved by many practices and experiments.Referring to lots of literature, the author summarizes the history knowledge about soil mechanics, mixture-theory and consolidation theory. By analyzing the unique physics and mechanics quality of soft clay, the author gives the characteristic and the limitation of the Terzaghi 1-D consolidation theory and the Biot consolidation theory. In the reality that soft clay consists of soil solid and water and contains holes in connection with each other, the author gives the control equations that are based on the modern porous media theory coming from the mixture theory. The control equations are rigorous and can reflect the basic physical principle of consolidation. The elasto-plastic and the visco-plastic distortion are the important quality of soft clay. The author sums up the stress-strain relation of soft clay and emphasizes the nonlinear elastic model and elasto-plastic model at the same time. Whereafter, the author gives the process of finite element technique by the use of the Galerkin method At the end of the paper, one illustration is evaluated, which is used to testify the theory.
