Electromagnetic valve is important switching element in liquid control systems and widely used in industries. However, owing to the transformation of kinetic energy into pressure energy, fast closing of the electromagnetic valve often leads to water hammer, which is a high pressure surge upstream the valve and could damage the valve or even the pipeline system. As the pipeline leakage could cause considerable damages to mankind and environment, it is necessary to take measures prevent the valve from the damage by water hammer. In this paper, experimental studies were performed on the effects of the electromagnetic valve structure on the water hammer. Different pressure rings were fabricated, experiment set-up was designed, sensor technique, data acquisition technique and signal processing technique, etc. were employed, and acquisition program was developed based on the LabVIEW—VI's software development platform. It is found that the bigger the diameter of the pressure ring, the less the serious positive surge to occur. Experimental measurements were also regressed and a linear relationship between the diameter of the pressure ring and the maximum transient pressure is given.
