VXIbus is recognized as an excellent platform used in the instrumentation and the automated test system. There are lots of advantages in the instrument system based on VXIbus, such as open architecture, modular system structure, high speed, high stability, easy to be integrated in automated test system, plug & play and so on. Arbitrary Waveform Generator module based on VXIbus is the important module in automated test system based on VXIbus, and can generate not only a wide variety of standard signals including sine, square, triangular waveforms but also a lot of user defined signals. Research on Arbitrary Waveform Generator module based on VXIbus is significant and valuable.Based on the detailed analysis of the Virtual instrument technology and Arbitrary Waveform Generator technology, Arbitrary Waveform Generator module based on VXIbus is discussed. The design principle and realization method of Arbitrary Waveform Generator based on VXIbus are given, which involved in VXIbus register based interface and Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS), furthermore, Arbitrary Waveform Generator module based on VXIbus is developed successfully.The experiment shows that the developed Arbitrary Waveform Generator based on VXIbus can generate the normal waveform and the arbitrary waveform, and can implement the adjustment of frequency, amplitude and phase. The frequency output range is 1Hz to 500KHz with frequency resolution 1Hz. The voltage peak-to-peak value is 10.24V with amplitude resolution 0.01V. The phase range is 1 to 360 with phase resolution 1.
