Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) is a kind of commonly used signal source with wide application in the field of scientific research, manufacture and teaching. The appearance of virtual instrument technology is a revolution on the development history of the instrument. It represents the latest direction and trend of instrument development and is an important field of the information technology. This thesis focuses on the research and design of Arbitrary Waveform Generator, using virtual instrument technology.Firstly, the thesis introduces the basic theories of virtual instrument technology, including the concept, composition, classification and the comparison of virtual instrument and traditional instrument. On the basis of this, the thesis introduces the software structure of virtual instrument system and briefly introduces the relevant technology, such as instrument driver, VISA, etc.Secondly, the thesis designs hardware and software of the Arbitrary Waveform Generator. The thesis formulates the whole scheme of the system and analyses the reason of using DDS technology. In addition, the thesis analyses the relevant technology and control method of AWG.The system is made up two parts, PC software and firmware of Arbitrary Waveform Generator, communicating with USB bus. In the part of firmware design, the thesis discusses function and selecting type principle of each hardware module, and provides the system resource allocation situation and solidification software procedure. In addition, the thesis does the logic design with Verilog HDL and analyses the realization of DDS technology in CPLD.The PC software adopts LabVIEW7.1 of NI Company as the development environment. The main work includes the design of panels, block diagram and debugging of the driver of USB communication interface. Finally, the thesis summarizes the work achievement, analyzes the weak point that the system exists, and gives the suggestion.
