With the development of the Nation's Economic, the traffic amount increased rapidly. Considering the factors of design, construction and age etc., a lot of arch bridges have been damaged over the days, going so far as to influence their service, and need to be maintained or strengthened in time. Aiming at this situation, certain problems as following are studied combined with Nanchong Jialingjiang River Bridge in the thesis, which can be a reference for the later similar works.(1) In order to know the current work station of the Nanchong Jialingjiang River Bridge, full detection and load test are carried out roundly and detailedly. The load bearing capacity of the bridge is evaluated properly.(2) Based on the detection and load test result, the finite element model of the bridge is established to assess the bearing capacity with finite element method (FEM) and analyze the reasons of the diseases.(3) According to the inspection, assessment and actual service of the existing bridge, the repairing and strengthening scheme and construction technique are expatiated. Also, new material and new technique used in this bridge strengthening are introduced.(4) Finally, the load test results of pre-reinforcement and post-reinforcement bridge are contrasted and analyzed in order to know the repair effect. The feasibility and innovation of the strengthening scheme is validated by the post-reinforcement load test, too.Based on the above work, valuable conclusions are obtained in the paper. Detection of the whole bridge and load test roundly could help to assess bearing capacity and service life of the existing bridge properly. Internal force analysis with FEM can provide the foundation to choose the correct reinforcement scheme. Also, micro-expensive concrete and the planting reinforce bar technique could be applied to the strengthening structures. The engineering practice of Nanchong Jialingjiang River bridge could be taken as reference by other existing similar arch bridge construction.
