With the whole speed-up of trains in our trunk railway system, the rate of derailment accident has been increasingly rising every year. The reliability of train brake system is the key point to influence the safety of the train running, whether the gas pressure data of the train brake pipe can be precisely gained in time directly influences the safety of train running. Therefore, the research on the portable testing instrument for the train brake system is full of pratical significance.Embedded system is omnipresent nowadays. It is applied as automation control sub system in a wide variety of applications such as household appliances, computer equipment, robotics, automobiles, instrumentation, aerospace, etc. Samsung's S3C44B0X 16/32-bit RISC microprocessor is designed to provide a cost-effective and high performance micro-controller solution for hand-held devices and general applications.This paper presents a process of a "Portable Testing Instrument for Train Brake Pipe Gas Pressure ", including hardware design and software development. In the first part, the design of schematics and also PCB layout of this system, which is based on an ARM7 microprocessor (S3C44B0X from Samsung Corp.) are finished. The system consists of mass extension memory, sdram, LCD display part, keyboard, UART, etc. As for the software running on this board,the testing programs, such as keyboad LCD display UART communication and Flash ,are written within the ADS1.2.The paper mainly discusses the system requirement analysis and resolving scheme. This study focuses on detailed developing process of all parts, pivotal technique, difficulties and resolves.
