This paper mainly studies the effect of High Side Voltage Control (HSVC) on the stability of power system.First, the paper analyzes the principle of HSVC, one control method of excitation control, compares it with the Line Drop Compensation (LDC) and the Negative Droop Setting, and concludes that these 3 methods are equivalent in principle. Second, based on a single-machine-infinite-bus system, the effect of HSVC on system voltage stability, power angle stability, phase-leading operation, static stability and transient stability is illustrated in the paper after calculation of practical data and theoretical analysis and the above effects of HSVC are also compared with those of TVC. Third, the main advantages and disadvantages of HSVC are pointed out. HSVC gives better performance than TVC in voltage stability, additional synchronizing torque and durability of static stability. The disadvantage is that the additional damping torque becomes worse than that of TVC when the power angle is large, i.e. the system has more probability to swing under extern disturbance. Fourth, the mechanism of HSVC's supporting worse damping torque is illustrated after deducing equations and theoretical analysis. To offset the disadvantage, the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is suggested to apply together with HSVC after simple analysis on the power system's low frequency swinging. And the practicability and validity of HSVC+PSS is proved by theoretical analysis. In the end, the result of the simulation of HSVC, TVC, HSVC+PSS and TVC+PSS is given. Besides the difference between HSVC and TVC, the simulation also shows that when the power angle is large, HSVC+PSS has more satisfying effect on static stability and transient stability than TVC+PSS. At last, the dynamic simulation test is accomplished in the Power System Dynamic Simulation Lab of electrical engineering department, Tsinghua Univ. The result of test coordinates with the above analysis.
