The Research On Commercial Street Renewal In Old City

The commercial street in old city are sensitive areas that influence the development of urban economy, society and culture. The quality of commercial central district is very important to determine the quality of the city. Because of its pattern, configuration, the character of the space, the quality of the environment and the reflection of the civilization. With the rapid development of civilization, a lot of problems have appeared, in the traditional commercial streets in our country, such as destroy of the historical streets, the monotonetes city infrastructures, the unbalance of real estate empoldering. All of these had led to business depression, the circurnstances getting worse and the none-effective work of government machine. So it is a important task to renovation and renewal commercial district in old city as quickly as can be.Jie-Fang street, one of the old commercial district of Wuhan, is the confluence area of such cultural features since ancient time. Long historical sediments and traditional street life had nurtured up a local culture of unique style. With the progress of the city, contradiction between the traditional material environment of Jie-Fang street and the new urban function & social life gradually becomes apparent. On one hand, material deterioration and structural aging have led to disintegration of its structure and losing of its urban culture; on the other hand, large scale but disordered plan of reconstruction is gradually nibbling the configuration and traditional material style of the old city zone, leading to swift shifting and reformation of the social, economic and cultural connotations therein and ruoturing the cultural vein of the city.The study in this thesis is concentrated on the example of Jie-Fang street. It tries to bring forward resolution strategies and design methods for the renovation and renewal process. It is expected that this study may help to figure out an integrated path, contributing to the improvement of physical environment in the commercial district of old city in China.The thesis is composed of five charters.Charter One gives a brief introduction on the relevant background , contents and methods of research on commercial district in old city.Charter Two introduced theories and experience of commercial district revival in the world, which was as theoretical base of the reaserch.Charter Three give a historic perspective on the origin and evolution of conmmercial district in WuHan,the history and development trend of Jie-Fang street also been introduced.Charter Four analyses the actualitys, including business condition, building conditiong ,traffic and environment of shopping.The Fifth Charter puts forward renovation and renewal design strategies based on the research.The conclusiong is concentrated on the improvement of physical environment, mainly solving the problems of traffic and circulation reformation ,the methods of renewal the buildings and renovation of environment and landscape.
