The thesis completed an 8-bit MCU(Micro Controller Unit) from front-end to back-end. According to Top-Down ASIC design flow, ISA(Instruction Set Architecture) and system structure of PIC16C71 and EM780156 were thoroughly analysised. Then micro-Architecture and functional module specification were defined, and a C reference model of the MCU was also developed. With the requirements of low power, low cost and high performance, the thesis optimized circuit structure and studied clock switch and clock-gating circuit in-depth.At first, a high automation design and verification platform was developed, then all the modules of the MCU were developed using synthesizable Verilog HDL. Synopsys VCS was employed as the verification tool, a C reference model was used as a golden model of the MCU. Hardware verification platform was developed on Xilinx XC2S200pq208. Synopsys Design Compiler was choosed as synthesis and DFT scan chain insertion tool. Clock tree synthesis and Place & Route was finished with Cadence Silicon Ensemble. During the whole design, corresponding verification work was done at each state of the design work. After completed the test version of the MCU, mixed-signal simulation platform was developed, an 8-bit successive approximation register architecture A/D converter was integrated into the MCU, and then was successfully validated by the mixed-signal simulation.A completely and high efficiency Top-down ASIC design flow was developed through the design process.
